Day 1: Designing a Rain Garden
This is my first entry for the garden we are building for Habitat for Humanity of Champaign and Piatt County. Technically, this is not the first day of our project because I've been working since last July to find a proper site.  Instead, this journal fast-forwards to the fun and exciting parts of project development:  The designing stage!

Our design team is composed of various native plant experts, soil scientists, and lanscape architects.  Right now, we are investigating the soil to figure out what type of plants will be best suited for this habitat.  To find out which soils your garden contains, visit

To find some native plant distributors, visit

Stay tuned for more developments!

Background:  There is a growing trend in building rain gardens in Illinois.  As mentioned in a previous Prairie Rivers Network Volunteer Enewsletter, rain gardens are created to retain rainwater at a site.

Our particular rain garden will be for the Habitat for Humanity home, now owned by the Nguyen family.  A few volunteers with lots of expertise have joined on board to help us design this rain garden.
